Why I am writing on this topic, despite being a doctor

Dear Readers

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah. I am a doctor (specialised in surgery). Some of you may wonder why a doctor is writing on this topic, rather than on medicine. So, I feel that I should answer to your this query first. From my childhood, I had a deep interest in and attachment with Islam. Home and abroad wherever I traveled, I tried to learn about the perceptions and ideas of Muslims and non-Muslims on Islam. When I came back home from the United Kingdom, I thought that I studied hard and earned MBBS and FRCS degrees to support my livelihood. Now if I die without studying the Holy Qur’an with its meanings and commentary and Allah asks me 'You studied big books in English language and became a specialist doctor but did you read the Qur’an with its meaning that I have sent to you in Arabic, outlining the code of life?', then what will be my answer? Out of this understanding, I began studying the Holy Qur’an with explanation. Due to my primary education in Madrasa (Islamic school), I was able to read and write Arabic. Afterwards, I gained more command in Arabic through conversation with patients and people during my four years of stay in Iraq.

When I started studying the Holy Qur’an, I noticed that there are many colloquial Arabic words in the Qur’an that are spoken in Iraq and I can easily understand them. So I felt a lot of enthusiasm and got fresh momentum. I remain very busy with my profession but still I made out time to read at least some verses (Ayah) of the Holy Qur’an and continue studying it with detailed commentary. I read between the lines of the Qur’an as I read books on surgery. For explanation I went through several Tafsirs. It took me about three years to complete studying the whole Qur’an. After reading the whole Qur’an that is after leaning all the first grade fundamentals as well as other aspects of Islam, I was surprised to see the huge difference between the lessons of the Qur’an and the perceptions of the common people. This huge difference prompted me to write on my religion. In particular, the following verse of the Qur’an compelled me to write- Translation: Surely those who conceal any part of the Book, which Allah has revealed and sell His revelations for a petty price, shall swallow nothing but fire into their bellies. On the Day of Judgment, Allah will neither speak to them nor purify them and they will have painful punishment. (Al-Baqarah: 174)

Explanation: Selling Allah’s revelations with a petty price means avoiding Allah’s instructions due to minor excuse. So, Allah said here, those who do not preach the injunctions and instructions of the Qur’an to people despite knowing them for minor excuse, they as if filled their bellies with fire. On the Day of Judgment, Allah will not talk to them (which will be a misfortune on that day) and they will not be purified (their small sins will not be forgiven. On the Day of Judgment, Allah will forgive small sins of human beings but those, who conceal the Qur’an despite knowing it, will not be forgiven). They will suffer tougher punishment. So I took the opportunity to write on this subject despite being a doctor to save myself from the punishment that is due for those who do not propagate the lessons of the Qur’an despite knowing it. As I decided to write, I became a bit confused how to present the teachings of the Qur’an. Sooner I remembered the 2nd verse of Sura A'raf that says- Translation: This Book (The Qur’an) is revealed to you; let there be no hesitation (confusion, fear) in your heart during warning people by it. Explanation: There may arise two types of hesitation in the heart of the people who warn others through the teachings of the Qur’an- 1.There may arise confusion or suspicion about the authenticity of the statement of the Qur’an, due to lack of understanding. It is a least frequented case.

2. If the statements go against the prevailing social perceptions or be inconsistent with the social values, there may be a fear of resistance or opposition or possibility of losing social or professional privileges like salary, donations or financial contributions. This condition often happens.

In order to avoid the above-mentioned cases, the general tendency is to conceal the lessons of the Qur’an that go against the traditional social perception or to distort the teachings so that there are less resistance or that becomes acceptable to all. This is one of the main reasons for ill condition of Muslims around the world. To eliminate these two very harmful methods, Allah exhorts the Muslims through Prophet Muhammad (SM), do not conceal or distort the statement of the Qur’an for fear or hesitation when you warn people through this Qur’an. In other places of the Qur’an (Sura Ghashiyah: 22, Nisa : 80), Allah says to His Prophet (SM), all people of the world will never agree on one issue, so present the teachings of the Qur’an without any concealment or alteration. Those who accept them will be blessed and rewarded and you organize them. And do not force those who do not want to accept them. After reading the whole Qur’an I decided to present the statements of the Qur’an in my speech or my writing without concealment or distortion. I wanted to start writing after I had studied the Qur’an but my mind did not allow me to do it without studying the Hadith. So I began to study Hadith. As I finished studying the Hadith, particularly the Mishkat [that includes almost all Hadiths of Sihah Sitta (Six books of authentic Hadith) and other Hadiths], I began writing this book on 17. 06. 01. Many people, specially participant brothers and sisters of 'Qur’ania' programme (Open discussion on the Qur’an), helped me to write this book. I pray to almighty Allah from the core of my heart, to accept this work for their salvation. 'Qur’ania' is held on first Friday of every English month at 10:00am at BIAM auditorium, 63 New Eskaton, Dhaka, Bangladesh. None is above error except Allah (ST) and the Pprophets. As human being, I also may make mistake. If any reader finds any mistake, please feel free to inform me. If found correct, it will be published it in the next edition, in shaa Allah.

May Allah grant my small service and make it a way to relief in the hereafter. Please pray for me. Allah Hafiz.
